Spirit of Leviathan Characteristics

What Is the Leviathan Spirit? If you have been a part of a deliverance ministry you are familiar with the spirit of leviathan characteristics. The Bible speaks of Leviathan as a strong and fierce marine spirit that is king over all the children of pride. Leviathan’s main objective is to stop the ministry of deliverance. It stops the anointing from flowing and therefore blocks the Spirit of God from moving.

Leviathan is described as a dragon that provokes fear and intimidation in the hearts of people. His fierceness prevents any man from taming him. Only God can tame him. There is nothing greater and more powerful than God and only He alone can defeat Leviathan. In the Book of Job, we find the Lord having a conversation with His servant Job. As God questions Job about his knowledge, He references Leviathan.

Job 41:1-11

The Questions God Asked Job Concerning Leviathan:

  1. Can you catch Leviathan with a fishhook?
  2. Tie his tongue with a rope?
  3. Can you put a rope through his nose or a hook through his jaw?
  4. Will he beg you to let him go free?
  5. Will he speak to you with gentle words?
  6. Make an agreement with you and promise to serve you forever?
  7. Will you play with Leviathan as you would play with a bird?
  8. Put a rope on him so that your girls can play with him?
  9. Will fishermen try to buy him from you?
  10. Will they cut him into pieces and sell him to the merchants?
  11. Can you throw spears into his skin or head?
  12. Do you think you can defeat him?

The Answer God Gave Job Concerning Leviathan:

If you ever lay a hand on Leviathan, you will never do it again!
Just think about the battle that would be!
Do you think you can defeat him?
Well, forget it!
There is no hope.
Just looking at him will scare you!
No one is brave enough to wake him up and make him angry.
Well, no one can challenge me either!
I owe nothing to anyone.
Everything under heaven belongs to me.

Let’s Take A Closer Look At The Leviathan

In order to recognize the spirit of Leviathan characteristics, we must take a closer look at this creature. How does the Bible described him to us within the scriptures? We will first start off by looking at his skin.

His Skin

Job 41:12-13

I will tell you about Leviathan’s legs, his strength, and his graceful shape. No one can pierce his skin. It is like armor!

The pride of Leviathan is found in his appearance. His skin and outer layer is so hard that no one can pierce his skin. His skin is like armor!

This is a characteristic of those who operate in pride, as they will have a wall around them. It is a wall of defense that says you will not get close enough to me to hurt me.  This wall I put up or this (skin of armor) will protect you from touching me and getting too close to my heart.

Most people with the spirit of pride will never truly open up to others. Their defense is to keep you away and intimidate you with fear so that you never can get close enough to their heart or to the real them.

His Face

Job 41:14
Who can open the doors of his face, with his terrible teeth all around?

Leviathans face is so fearful and intimidating. Again, it is another defense put up to invoke fear upon all those who dare to approach. Even to look upon the face of someone operating under this spirit is dreadful.

Sometimes you will see this spirit in operation when someone is speaking. Their eyes are haughty and piercing and they never smile to encourage others. Any comments that are made from this spirit are normally done in a manner where it is intended to chew you up and spit you out. This spirit gives no mercy,

Individuals operating under the Leviathan spirit feel as though nothing you say is worth listening to. This spirit considers itself superior over all others and that it is always right. People operating under this spirit will seldom repent or ask for forgiveness.

His Rows Of Scales

Job 41:15-17

His back has rows of shields tightly sealed together.
They are so close to each other that no air can pass between them.
The shields are joined to each other.
They hold together so tightly that they cannot be pulled apart.

Leviathan’s rows of scales are his pride. His scales are so close together that no air can pass through. Air in the spirit represents the Holy Spirit. Leviathan’s scales are so tight that they prevent the Holy Spirit and the fresh winds of God to flow in their life or the in life of a ministry.

A person operating under the control of this spirit will never be able to fully operate in the gifts the Lord has given them. With it’s tightly fit rows of scales it cuts off Holy Spirit and the gifts from freely flowing thereby preventing deliverance and healing from occurring.

In order for a church to function properly and fitly joined together for the building of the Kingdom, we must flow in the five fold ministry. These 5 ministry gifts are apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor and teacher. Leviathan will block these ministries from operating in a church. All five are essential for the building of the body of Christ and no one person holds all five positions.

When Leviathan is operating in a church, it prevents the body from receiving the gifts of the Holy Spirit and this produces dry and ineffective members within the Body of Christ. You will know Leviathan is controlling you when you find it difficult to move in the gifts of the Spirit such as speaking in tongues, prophesying, walking in faith, healing, miracles and being able to discern spirits.

His Nose and His Mouth

When Leviathan sneezes, it is like lightning flashing out.
His eyes shine like the light of dawn.
Burning torches come from his mouth.
Sparks of fire shoot out.
Smoke pours from his nose
Like burning weeds under a boiling pot.
His breath sets coals on fire, and flames shoot from his mouth.

The False Light of Leviathan

Leviathan sits in the Holy Place of the temple and counterfeits the things of God. He blocks the entrance into the Holy of Holies so that you are not able to press past the veil into the fullness of God. This spirit will cause people to feel like they are in the fullness of God behind the veil, when in actuality, they never made it past the Holy place.

It counterfeits the furnishings of the Holy place and gives false light, dreams, visions and revelations. By counterfeiting the golden lampstand in the Holy Place which represent light and understand, it gives a false understanding of the things of God. Many times you will see the spirit of error and religion operating in conjunction with Leviathan. Instead of the Spirit of God  and love reigning, you will see the law ruling.

When Leviathan is in operation against you, you will feel as though you are up against a brick wall.
Even though you desire to go higher in the things of God, it is difficult to push past this place into the higher and deeper things of the Lord.

As Leviathan blocks the steps to go higher in the spirit, he also prevents you from going further by warring against you with pride, fear, intimidation, doubt, worry and all the things that are not apart of the Kingdom of God. Many Christians spend their whole lives stuck right there at that brick wall.

It’s a Counterfeit

It is in this place that people become complacent and lose their desire to go higher and deeper in the things of God. People can die spiritually in this place while operating under the counterfeit anointing of Leviathan. They never advance past the Holy Place, which means they never truly have an experience with the Father behind the veil.

As Leviathan counterfeits the true light and understanding, many Christians begin to operate in spiritual pride. They begin to feel as though they have arrived in God and they become stubborn, prideful and unteachable. It is in this place that you will see many hold on to doctrine, the law and religion. Trying to keep the law will block the move of Christ in a new and fresh way. It causes them to hold on to denominational beliefs and religious ways instead of embracing the Kingdom of God and His love.

You will see the Spirit of Leviathan operating in many churches that believe only their denomination is right. They truly believe they are the only ones going to heaven and the ones with the enlightened truth. When you find the Spirit of Leviathan operating within a church, you will not see the fullness of God. In worship you will go up only so high and again you will feel that stone ceiling.  No matter how far you want to go up in the spirit, you can’t and It is a very frustrating feeling.

His Stiff Neck Stubbornness

Job 41:22-25
His neck is very powerful.
People are afraid and run away from him.
There is no soft spot in his skin.
It is as hard as iron.
His heart is like a rock; he has no fear.
It is as hard as a millstone.
When he gets up, even the strongest people are afraid.
They run away when he swings his tail.

When the spirit of Leviathan is in operation, it causes you to be stiff necked and stubborn. Your mind will only be one tracked. Nothing and no one will change your way of thinking.  When a new move of God comes, you won’t be able to see it  or move out in it. Again, It is the religious spirit working in conjunction with pride that hinders people from growing in God. When you stop growing you get stagnated, stale and remain stuck in the old ways and moves of God. This is how Leviathan works with the Spirit of Religion.

Do Not Harden Your Heart

The Spirit of Leviathan hardens your heart to embrace people and the things of God. When your heart becomes hardened to the Word is not able to take root in your heart. Your heart becomes stony ground for the Word of God to take root. Because the heart has become stony and is not a heart of flesh, it has no softness to absorb the Word. It sits on the surface and when rough times come, it has not taken root in your heart and is therefore snatched  away by the enemy.

Matthew 13:18-23

“So listen to the meaning of that story about the farmer:
“What about the seed that fell by the path? That is like the people who hear the teaching about God’s kingdom but do not understand it. The Evil One comes and takes away what was planted in their hearts.
“And what about the seed that fell on rocky ground? That is like the people who hear the teaching and quickly and gladly accept it. But they do not let the teaching go deep into their lives. They keep it only a short time. As soon as trouble or persecution comes because of the teaching they accepted, they give up.

“And what about the seed that fell among the thorny weeds? That is like the people who hear the teaching but let worries about this life and love for money stop it from growing. So it does not produce a crop in their lives.
“But what about the seed that fell on the good ground? That is like the people who hear the teaching and understand it. They grow and produce a good crop, sometimes 100 times more, sometimes 60 times more, and sometimes 30 times more.”

His Strength

Job 41:26-34

Swords, spears, and darts only bounce off when they hit him.
These weapons don’t hurt him at all!
He breaks iron as easily as straw.
He breaks bronze like rotten wood.
Arrows don’t make him run away.
Rocks thrown at him seem as light as chaff.
When a wood club hits him, it feels to him like a piece of straw.
He laughs when anyone throws a spear at him.
The skin on his belly is like sharp pieces of broken pottery.
He leaves tracks in the mud like a threshing board.
He stirs up the water like a boiling pot.
And makes it bubble like a pot of boiling oil.
When he swims, he leaves a sparkling path behind him.
He stirs up the water and makes it white with foam.
No animal on earth is like him.
He is an animal made without fear.
He looks down on the proudest of creatures.
Leviathan is king over all the wild animals.”

Recognizing Traits Of The Spirit of Leviathan And How It Operates

The spirit of Leviathan stirs up the emotions and will of people.  Often times a person with the spirit of Leviathan deals with anger issues, restlessness, sleeplessness, and uneasiness most of the time. Leviathan protects itself with armor. In the same way that proud people have a way of closing themselves off from everyone and hides behind a tough exterior and emotional walls to protect themselves. Leviathan will attempt to block the flow of the Holy Spirit within the church assembly and its main target is against the prayer and deliverance ministry within a ministry.

Leviathan Attacks Prayer

The one thing that Leviathan hates is prayer! To pray means to humble yourself before God, and Leviathan is never humble or repentant. Supplication and prayers bring forth deliverance and healing, but Leviathan’s pride will not allow him to humble himself and repent.

A person operating under the Spirit of Leviathan will have you thinking they are always right and you are always wrong.  It’s always the other person’s fault with a person operating under this spirit. Leviathan is a faultfinder and accuser and takes on the role of Satan, the accuser of the brethren. Leviathan will never take responsibility for it’s actions and loves to play the blame game. This spirit also works in conjunction with The Jezebel Spirit. You will find many of the same characteristics in both the Jezebel and Leviathan Spirits.

 Leviathan Causes Sleepiness In Prayer

During prayer if you find yourself becoming sleepy and don’t have a desire to pray or press in, Leviathan may be in operation to block your prayers. The spirit of pride must be broken down when we go in to pray. Ask God for a spirit of humility as you approach the throne of grace. Understand that it is only through our humble prayers and faith in God that He will move on our behalf.

Leviathan Speaks Harshly

Another sign of Leviathan at work is harshness. People operating under the spirit of Leviathan do not speak with soft words or kindness.  They speak and act very harshly toward others. This aggressive attitude and behavior stirs up anger, wrath and fear. The scripture says His breath sets coals on fire, and flames shoot from his mouth. If you find that your tone with others is harsh, Leviathan may be speaking through you.

Leviathan Attacks Covenant and Marriages

Leviathan is also a covenant breaker. Many business partnerships and marriages suffer from the spiritual attack of Leviathan because Leviathan will not keep covenant.  A marriage will not survive if the husband or the wife is operating in the spirit of pride and refuses to submit themselves to one another.

Marriage is about working together and many times humbling yourself to the other spouse during arguments. Leviathan will never be wrong in a disagreement and because it is stiff-necked and stubborn, it will not change. Without covenant in the lives of believers, there is no peace, prosperity, healing or protection from the enemy.

The Personal Battle

The battle with the spirit of Leviathan may be one of the most difficult that you may encounter in your Christian walk. As you have read, pride is a very strong spirit and the only way to combat it is through humility and the Word of God.

Ask the Lord God to come into your life and reveal any areas where the Spirit of Leviathan has hardened your heart and has blocked you from receiving the fullness of God. When we humble ourselves, He will heal us and soften our hearts that we may be able to believe His word for our lives.

This humility and contrite [broken] spirit before God will begin to remove all doubt, fear, hardness and inability to understand the ways of God. Only God has the power to smite Leviathan and break his heads which is his gained authority over your life.

Two of the weapons God has given us to use against the Spirit of Leviathan and pride is prayer and fasting. When we fast, we humble our souls. As we fast and pray for deliverance against the spirit of haughtiness [pride] in our lives and the lives of others, we must Bind the Spirit of Haughtiness [Pride] and loose a humble and contrite spirit.
